Since branching out on his own, Shawn has retained his love for the elements of traditional craft and joyful, handmade detailing in buildings. Many of his residential projects draw inspiration from the romantic structures of Bay Area great Bernard Maybeck--whose seminal work influenced countless local Craftsman-style residences. These Arts & Crafts and Bungalow Style additions and remodels are a big part of the work Shawn and SBB Residential have taken on each season.

The firm’s work isn’t limited to Arts & Crafts, though; Shawn was schooled in the modernist tradition while at U.C. Berkeley, and SBB Residential is equally at home working in the Contemporary vein. Modern homes (and even many bungalows) benefit from more open, dynamic, and light-filled spaces.

Additionally, traditionalist design has seldom incorporated green principles from the foundation up: By contrast, many of SBB Residential’s recent projects have been carefully thought out to seamlessly integrate:

• reclaimed and recycled materials into the heart of the design (glass tiles and city-tree-wood countertops at the Boyer Residence; recycled-glass backsplashes and fly-ash concrete counters at the Rigby Residence),
• design for passive solar management (Stern Residence), and
• specification of off-site-manufactured, hyper-insulated building components -- which hugely reduce time and waste at the construction site, and also reduce the homeowners’ energy-use footprint by as much as half (Valley Residence).
